第十三周英文学习内容及作业

This Week

Math

The week began with a review and a test on Chapter 6 in our Math textbooks – Making graphs. The topics included choosing a reasonable scale and interval, graph ordered pairs, line graphs, Venn diagrams, histograms and choosing the appropriate graph. The main focus for the students is to be able to read data from a graph, to be able to see how data is represented, and to be able to make the correct choices when creating your own graph.

Now, we have moved on to multiplication of whole numbers and decimals. This is an area the students have already covered in their Chinese lessons, so the focus here is on identifying how to answer English word problems.

Homework – to refresh skills, page 35 and 36 in practice workbooks.

Language Arts

We reviewed and then tested the students on the story “Rosie: A Visiting Dog”. We have begun our new story, “The Stories Julian Tells”. We have introduced the new vocabulary words; mustache, cartwheel, collection, seriously, beyond and fastened. The story will focus on the theme of friendship. Students will learn to follow a sequence of events.

No homework

Writing

This week is Thanksgiving. During writing class we discussed the idea of what it means to be thankful.  Students were instructed to write a short paragraph about what they are thankful for in their lives.

Spelling

The new spelling words were introduced this week, and the focus is on possessives and plurals. The idea is that students should be able to identify when they need to be using a possessive and when they need to be using a plural. For example, when to use “sisters, sister’s and sisters’”. By the end of this spelling module students should be able to explain the difference between the three.

Homework – review the spelling words. Create just 5 sentences using any of the words.

 Grammar

The current grammar topic is subject-verb agreement. This involves informing the students of some of the rules we have to follow when choosing the correct verb. We have also begun to look at pronoun agreement. Again this involves telling the students some rules about how we choose to write he/she/it/his/her/their/our/we etc. Pages 163-171 in the grammar textbook cover these rules.

No homework – we will review this more in class this week. Students may want to look over their notebooks as their notes may be more helpful and simple for them.
